Western Thrace Turkish Minority Press issued a joint statement against İlhan Ahmet's accusations.
We are watching with amazement and sadness the accusations of Rhodope PASOK - KINAL Deputy İlhan Ahmet against the minority press in the process that started with the statements to Chronos broadcasting from Komotini that "Internal affairs of the minority is not the duty of the consuls" and continued with his dismissal from the Western Thrace Turkish Minority Advisory Board.
In a video statement made after his dismissal from the Advisory Board, İlhan Ahmet claimed that some minority newspapers were reporting against minority deputies and described such publications, which he implied as a conspiracy, as "outright lies".
Not content with this, MP İlhan Ahmet spoke to Chronos radio again shortly after his statement and once again targeted the minority press. Continuing his statements against Turkey's Consul General in Komotini, İlhan Ahmet claimed that three minority newspapers, which he did not name, published articles against him under the direction of Murat Ömeroğlu.
Unfortunately, this is not the first time that PASOK - KINAL Deputy İlhan Ahmet has voiced such unfounded accusations against the minority press.
"Promised money," "doing business with instructions", "who does business with instructions" he smeared against the minority press, which he claims to have been used by "secret forces", to "projects", "smear campaigns", "intrigues", "operations". The definitions of "non-existent", "for a little money", "poor people" and "hitmen" have not been erased from memory yet.
Unfortunately, this behavior towards the minority press, which is considered good when it publishes the press releases sent from its political office, but bad when there are news and criticisms that it does not like, unfortunately does not coincide with the discourses of "democratic society" and "democratization" that the deputy constantly underlines.
We are not press spokespersons for MPs. Just as you are responsible to your voters, we are also responsible to our readers.
It is the minority that comes first for us; the interests and rights of the minority.
If your duty is to do politics, our duty is to evaluate the actions of politicians.
It is in no way acceptable for you to declare us as your adversary while fulfilling our primary duty, and especially to use expressions that will implicate us.
The press, which you accuse of carrying out a perception operation and that you claim to have unfairly targeted you, in fact, shared the views and thoughts you expressed yourself with all its nakedness.
Everyone is responsible for their actions. It is the people who will evaluate what you have done in your political life and what we have written.
Regardless of where it comes from, we will continue our main duty despite all kinds of accusations and attrition efforts.
First of all, the Turkish minority of Western Thrace… The problems and rights of the minority are our priority. If we are looking for which side we are on; we are on the side of our minority.
We acted with the responsibility of being the Turkish minority press on our shoulders and we will continue to do so. Whatever the cost, we are ready to pay.
