The farmers of the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Province, who support the farmers' protests across Greece, continue to seek solutions to economic difficulties.

In order to convey the problems experienced by the farmers of the EMT Region and to make their voice heard, the representatives of the Coordination Committee of the Agricultural and Livestock Unions of the region met with the Minister of Agriculture, Development and Food Lefteris Avgenakis, who visited the provinces of Rhodope and Evros on Sunday 11 February 2024.

At the meeting, which took place in the Yorgos Pavlidis Meeting Hall in the former governorate building in Komotini, the problems in the field of agriculture and animal husbandry were conveyed to the minister. The government was asked to find solutions to the problems.

Minister Avgenakis, who met with the representatives and listened to the problems, said: "There is absolutely no postponement between the people in the primary sector and the government at the moment. There is dialogue, there are problems classified as local, national and European. There are working groups working on these and solutions will be produced."

Stating that the government is practically on the same side as the farmers, Avgenakis noted that in this context, it has taken initiatives not only at the national but also at the European level in order to solve the problems they face.

Avgenakis assured that talks with the farmers' institutional representatives will continue and explained that dialogue is an important component of their cooperation.

"We are building a relationship of trust and consistency" with farmers, the minister said, noting that a delegation of farmers will be met with the Prime Minister at a meeting scheduled for Tuesday at the Ministry of Agriculture Development and Food.

Responding to the problems raised by the farmers, Minister Avgenakis acknowledged the need for further changes in the Common Agricultural Policy (ΚΑΠ) and said that Greece had submitted proposals for improvements in this direction, which were approved.

The meeting held in Komotini was attended by Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Development and Food Stavros Keletzis, President of the Agricultural Support Premiums Distribution Authority (OPEKEPE) Kiryakos Babasidis, President of the Province of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Christodoulos Topsidis, Vice-Presidents of the Province, Advisor to the President of the Province Ahmet Pehlivan, former Member of Parliament Mustafa Katranci, President of the Thracian Tobacco Producers Cooperative Sinan Ahmet and representatives of cooperatives operating in the agricultural sector.
