Migration Min Panagiotopoulos: Path opens for EU funding of Evros border fence
Migration and Asylum Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos, in an interview with SKAI TV, announced that “ the path is clear for financing the Evros border fence using European funds”.
Panagiotopoulos highlighted that the issue is gaining significant traction on the European agenda, particularly with Poland assuming the EU.
Presidency on January 1. Poland, he explained, as a border country has a vested interest in enhancing the protection of the EU's external borders.
He explained that during discussions in the European Parliament's Economic Committee on the EU budget, provisions were made for the first time to fund infrastructure aimed at bolstering the security of Europe's borders. This development, he noted, opens the way for financing the Evros fence through EU funds, as anticipated.
"While the text refers to infrastructure enhancements, the fence is included in such provisions, making this a positive development," Panagiotopoulos concluded.
