MeRA25: 'LNG facility in the Thracian Sea is a bomb'

The MeRA25 party has stated that the Floating LNG Storage and Gasification Unit to be put into operation in Alexandroupoli is an offence against the environment and that it stands with the people and organisations of the region.

"The government and the local oligarchy are preparing a floating LNG platform off Alexandroupoli and Samothrace. As the inhabitants and organisations of the region have stated, this is a facility that is planned, decided and implemented without public consultation and without any benefits for the Evros community."

"The plant, which will convert fossil fuel and transport it to Bulgaria, is categorised under the European Seveso Directive, which means that it is a plant at risk of accidents due to gas leaks, fires, explosions and chemical spills," the statement said.

Reminding that environmental organisations such as WWF Hellas, Greenpeace, the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature and the Hellenic Society of Ornithology have appealed to the Council of State, MeRA25 noted that the establishment of such hazardous industrial facilities in Natura areas is expressly prohibited by current legislation, despite the fact that the plant in question will operate entirely within a Natura area.

No public consultation was carried out during the licensing of the plant, as required by national and EU law, MeRA25 accused that everything was done in secrecy.

MeRa25 Party emphasised that it stands with the people and organisations of the region against the project that threatens the environment.
