A torrential downpour honoured 79 years after the memory of 526 fellow citizens who went missing overnight and were exterminated in the Treblinka concentration camp.
Members and friends of the Cultural Development Center of Thrace (PAKETHRA) held the established annual memorial service in memory of the 526 Greek Jews of Xanthi, on Sunday, March 7, 2022 .
The latter - victims of a targeted hatred - were arrested on March 3, 1943, forcibly assembled, deported by Bulgarian collaborators of the Nazi regime and occupiers of our region, and exterminated by the Nazis at the Treblinka concentration camp in Treblinka.
The memorial service was held at the newly erected "Holocaust Memorial of 526 Greek Jews in Xanthi" on Eleftherias Square.
On the occasion of the event, teacher Vagia Papadopoulou, who has long dealt with issues of historical memory and awareness of the Holocaust, noted: "79 years after the violent and unjust extermination of our 526 Jewish fellow citizens, the especially important for another -beyond the obvious -reason: In all the previous years, the memorial service was held in front of the of Xanthi. This year, therefore, was the first time that the memorial service was held at the Monument - the idea of which was conceived, designed, constructed and spent by PAKETHRA, and especially its tireless and inspiring President, Mr.
Next step a space of memory and documentation for the Jews of Xanthi
After the ceremony, Mr. Aivaliotis in his short speech referred to his next vision: the creation of a space for documentation and memory of the 526 Greek Jews of Xanthi inside the Isaac Daniel Building, where photographs, genealogical trees and everything in general will be collected. "We try and those who can, let us help in this direction", said Mr. Aivaliotis concluding: "With the help of the Municipality of Xanthi we continue the work in the Jewish Cemetery. "Things are moving forward."
As Vagia Papadopoulou pointed out, many congratulations are due to PAKETHRA, to the Municipality of Xanthi, to Mr. Vassilis Aivaliotis for his inexhaustible energy and tireless efforts. "The deep knowledge and respect of the past are necessary elements both for the determination of the character and the historical identity of a city, as well as for the awakening of the collective memory of a place and its inhabitants", she pointed out.
