Mustafa Cambaz, a photojournalist from the Yeni Şafak newspaper who was martyred during the July 15, 2016 coup attempt in Türkiye, was commemorated in his hometown of Menetler village in Western Thrace.

The memorial event, held in Menetler village under the Kozlukebir Municipality in the Rhodope region, included recitations of the Quran and a traditional mevlit prayer ceremony. Attendees included Türkiye’s Consul General in Komotini Aykut Ünal, Mufti of Komotini İbrahim Şerif, Kozlukebir Mayor Erdem Hüseyin, and representatives from various local organizations and religious communities.

During the ceremony, prayers and hymns were recited. Deputy Mufti Fehim Ahmet led the prayers, while Mufti İbrahim Şerif emphasized the spiritual significance of martyrs, reminding attendees that martyrs are alive in spirit and hear the prayers offered for them.

Consul General Ünal expressed gratitude to the participants and highlighted the ongoing solidarity between the Turkish homeland and the Western Thrace community. The ceremony concluded with a communal meal for attendees.
