Islamophobic poster hung in front of historical mosque

An Islamophobic poster was hung in front of the historical Çelebi Sultan Mehmed Mosque in Didimoteichon (Dimetoka) – Evros (Meriç)!

An unidentified person or persons shouted "Stop the Islamization of Evros now!" on the wall of an unused space opposite the historical Çelebi Sultan Mehmed Mosque in Dimetoka. A provocative poster was hung. The historical Çelebi Sultan Mehmed Mosque in the town of Didimoteichon (Dimetoka) was turned to ashes in the fire in 2017.

The interior and roof of the mosque was completely burned in the fire that broke out late at night, connecting Tuesday, March 21 to Wednesday, March 22. On the one hand, the doubts about the fire remain in the memories, on the other hand, despite the intervening years, it is seen that the restoration phase has not been started seriously.

Making a statement to the minority press regarding the issue, Didimoteichon (Dimetoka) Muslims Association President Süleyman Macır said that they realized that the poster had been hung on Sunday evening, January 30th, and that this situation made everyone living in the region uneasy.

Macır said "For many years, Muslims and Christians have lived in our region in peace, as our religion commands, and we continue to live. There is no place for "Islamophobic" attacks that are on the rise in many parts of Europe, especially in our region. This is how we want it to be known. We respect all religions as per the religion of Islam, and we expect the same respect towards our religion from people of other religions.”

The biggest expectation of the Muslims in the region is the restoration and opening of the historical Çelebi Sultan Mehmed Mosque in Dimetoka.

However, Greece still could not complete the restoration for many years due to various excuses. As a result of the fire that broke out during the restoration work in 2017, the interior and historical wooden roof of the mosque was completely destroyed.
