İskeçe Market Proposes extended summer hours to boost local economy

The İskeçe Traders Association has proposed a shift in the city’s summer retail schedule, aiming to enhance economic activity and improve daily life for both consumers and business owners in İskeçe.

The initiative, approved during the association’s General Assembly, reflects a broader strategy to adapt to seasonal conditions and evolving consumer habits.

New Summer Schedule Proposal
Under the proposed plan, afternoon retail hours would shift from 18:00–21:00 to 18:30–22:00. According to Association President Nikos Grigoriadis, the adjustment is better aligned with the realities of the summer season, including higher temperatures and changing shopping patterns.

Grigoriadis emphasized that the revised schedule is designed to benefit both retailers and customers by offering greater flexibility and convenience.

Decision Backed by Member Consensus
The proposal emerged from discussions held during the General Assembly on April 29, 2026, at the Xanthi Chamber of Commerce. Members reviewed the administrative and financial reports for 2025 before engaging in a constructive dialogue on future initiatives.

The assembly unanimously endorsed upcoming activities and approved the schedule change by majority vote, highlighting strong internal support for adaptive measures.

Benefits for Consumers and Businesses
The later opening time is expected to make shopping more comfortable during hot summer afternoons, while extended evening hours will allow working individuals to access services without time pressure after work.

From an economic standpoint, the change is anticipated to increase foot traffic and consumer spending. Recent influxes of organized tourist groups from neighboring countries, including Türkiye, have underscored the region’s growing appeal.

Strengthening Local Economy and Urban Life
Longer operating hours are also expected to contribute to a more vibrant city atmosphere, boosting activity in the commercial center and enhancing İskeçe’s attractiveness for both residents and visitors.

Next Step: Municipal Approval
The Association’s Board has been authorized to submit the proposal to the municipal authorities for final approval. Officials reaffirmed their commitment to supporting local businesses through timely and responsive initiatives.
