Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF) President Halit Habipoğlu stated that Greece is the only European Union (EU) country that does not recognise its national minority.

Habipoğlu issued a statement on the news that Greece has blocked the start of membership negotiations between Albania and the European Union (EU), citing the imprisonment of the elected mayor of the Greek national minority in Albania.

Habipoğlu criticised Greece for not showing the sensitivity it shows to the Greek minority in Albania towards the Turkish minority in Western Thrace living in its own territory and used the following expressions:

"Our country, which closely and carefully monitors the protection and development of human and minority rights of the Greek minority in Albania, has been violating the rights of our community, which is under its own responsibility, for years, and disregards the EU values of which it is a member."

Habipoğlu emphasised that Greece is the only country in the EU that does not recognise its national minority and criticised the country for applying double standards on human rights.
