Former Independent MP İsmail Rodoplu, a leading figure in the Western Thrace Turks, died in the morning today.

İsmail Rodoplu a leading figure who marched on 29 Januaries with the minority members for the denied Turkish identity of the Western Thrace Turks, to stop their assimilated policies and for their rights not granted, passed away this morning.

Rodoplu had a cerebral hemorrhage in 2010. He had been living a quiet life at home in Gümülcine for 10 years.

Who is İsmail Rodoplu?

Ismail Rodoplu, born in 1938 in the village of Semetli, Gümülcine (Komotini), graduated from the Department of History in 1968. Rodoplu published a newspaper named “Gerçek” (The Truth) in 1977 about 400 issues until 1994. İsmail Rodoplu, who had an active political life, entered the general elections of November 5, 1989 as an independent candidate as one of the leaders of the independent list movement, which is an important turning point for the political life of the Western Thrace Turkish Minority. İsmail Rodoplu, who served as the President of the Western Thrace Minority Higher Education Association before becoming a deputy, was also a member of the Western Thrace Turkish Minority Advisory Board.
