Former Consul General of Komotini, retired Ambassador Şükrü Tufan passes away

Şükrü Tufan passed away in Acıbadem Bodrum Hospital where he was being treated after a brain haemorrhage.

The funeral of Şükrü Tufan will be buried in Bitez Cemetery after the afternoon prayer to be performed at Bitez Gülsevim Rüştü Kaynak Mosque on Friday, 3 May.

In the condolence message issued by the Consulate General of Türkiye in Komotini, it was stated that "We are deeply saddened by the loss of retired Ambassador Şükrü Tufan, who served as Consul General of the Republic of Turkey in Komotini between 1981-1984. We wish God's mercy to the deceased and condolences to his family."

In a written statement made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey following the death of Şükrü Tufan, it was stated as follows: "We are deeply saddened by the loss of Şükrü TUFAN (1942, Çorlu), a valuable member of our community, who served in our Ministry between 1969 and 2007 and represented our State as Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Morocco and Argentina, on 30 April 2024. The funeral of our deceased Ambassador will be buried in Bitez Cemetery after the funeral prayer to be performed following the afternoon prayer at Bodrum Bitez Mosque on Friday, 3 May 2024. We wish God's mercy to the deceased and condolences to his grieving family."

Born in 1942 in Çorlu, Tekirdağ, Şükrü Tufan graduated from Galatasaray High School and then from Ankara University Faculty of Political Sciences. Between 1967 and 2007, he served in various diplomatic positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye.

Şükrü Tufan, who served as the Consul General of Komotini between 1981-1984, became the first ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina between 1993-1996.

Having represented Türkiye as an ambassador in Morocco and Argentina, Tufan was appointed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2007.
