Fire near Kalkanca, Gümülcine sparks concern

A fire broke out in the early evening near the settlement of Kalkanca, within the Gümülcine Municipality.
The blaze began in a rural reed field and quickly spread due to strong winds. Firefighters from the Gümülcine Fire Department were dispatched to the scene, but ground efforts alone proved insufficient. To prevent further escalation, aerial support was deployed.
Helicopters and firefighting aircraft joined the operation. Meanwhile, at 19:07, Greece’s Civil Protection Ministry sent emergency text alerts to residents of the Rodopi region near Kalkanca, warning them to remain cautious.
Thanks to intensive efforts both on the ground and from the air, the fire was eventually brought under control.
