Farmers’ blockade from İskeçe moves to the regional authority
They declare themselves determined to continue the struggle in different forms of mobilization
The road blockades may have ended, but the farmers’ struggle has not — it is simply changing form. This was the decision of the Panhellenic Committee during its meeting in Nikaia, where it was also decided to organize a nationwide rally in Athens next Friday.
Within this framework, a march involving 20 tractors by farmers from İskeçe took place today at 2:30 p.m. in the city center. Following the march, the farmers lined up their tractors in front of the Regional Authority building at Dioikitiriou Square, without obstructing traffic.
The farmers stated that their action is symbolic in nature and announced that they will remain overnight and depart tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. They also called on local society to stand by them with its presence, as it has done throughout the period when they were on the roads.
President of the İskeçe Coordinating Committee, D. Dontsos:
“We demand that the issues raised during the dialogue be institutionalized”
In statements to the press, Dionysis Dontsos, head of the İskeçe Coordinating Committee, reaffirmed the determination of İskeçe’s farmers to fight until the end. He also announced the establishment of a new association that will represent all farmers of İskeçe.
“We are here to make a strong statement, as decided at the nationwide meeting in Nikaia, demanding that the issues raised during the dialogue with the Prime Minister’s Office be institutionalized,” Dontsos said. “We are here in wind and rain, even during İskeçe’s carnival season.”
