Far-Right Terror in Western Thrace: "Turks and Anarchists Out"

A video posted two months ago on Instagram by an account believed to have been active for months under the name "ethnikistes_komotinis" (Komotini Nationalists) has caused an uproar in the Greek media as of January 6.

"RODOPI WAS ALWAYS GREEK AND WILL REMAIN SO, TURKS AND ANARCHISTS OUT"

The account, which initially featured a Kalashnikov rifle as its profile picture, stated in its bio: "Rodopi was always Greek and will remain so. Turks and anarchists out. We stand behind any honest nationalist group far from separatism." Following the viral spread of the racist video on social media, the account changed its name to "komotini_nationalists" and removed its profile picture.

The video shows a group of youths, presumed to be linked to the account, cornering a young boy. His accent reveals he is likely not a native Greek speaker and probably a member of the Turkish minority. They force him to shout "Long live Kasidiaris," referring to Ilias Kasidiaris, a jailed former member of the far-right Golden Dawn party, which was convicted as a criminal organization in 2019.

The account's slogan, "Turks and anarchists out," implies the boy was targeted for being Turkish, as his age excludes the possibility of him being an anarchist. The incident has sparked outrage on social media, drawing criticism from both the Turkish minority and the broader Greek community.
