"Culture-Art Festival" of Xanthi Turkish Union took place on Monday 19 June.
Event full of history, culture and art organised by İTB

The "Xanthi Culture-Art Festival", which was postponed due to the three-day mourning declared throughout the country for those who lost their lives in the sinking of the refugee boat, took place on Monday 19 June with great enthusiasm and crowd. 

During the Culture - Art Festival held at the Xanthi Minority High School Sports Complex, the end of year exhibitions of the Xanthi Turkish Union's courses of needlework, sewing, embroidery and handicrafts were opened.

The courses and study groups of the Union presented performances. The concert of the ITB Choir was watched with great appreciation. The "Fashion Show of Traditional Clothes from Yesterday to Today" mesmerised all the guests. The event was organised with the support of the Xanthi Minority Secondary School - High School PTA.

During the Xanthi Culture - Art Festival, the "Handicraft Exhibition", where the artefacts and products produced in the ITB courses were exhibited, was opened. The exhibition was opened by Ozan Ahmetoğlu, President of ITB, Aykut Ünal, Consul General of Turkey in Komotini and Mustafa Trampa, Mufti of Xanthi.

For the first time this year, the traditional apron (fıta) of Xanthi region was also included in the exhibition.

 In his opening speech, Xanthi Turkish Union President Ozan Ahmetoğlu thanked all the working groups involved in the organisation of the Culture - Art Festival, Xanthi Minority Secondary School High School, Mufti's Office of Xanthi and WTMUGA for their support. 

Ahmetoğlu emphasised that they are proud of the Xanthi Turkish Union which protects and preserves the culture and identity of the Turkish Minority of Western Thrace and reveals the richness of culture and said "We have witnessed an extraordinary richness in the exhibition we have just opened. We are once again honoured with our motifs and colours, it is a cultural treasure. As the first association of our minority, we act with the awareness that the Xanthi Turkish Union, the cultural sycamore of Western Thrace Turks, has been struggling against a great injustice and injustice for 40 years. We know that we are right in this struggle and we believe that one day this will be recognised and justice will be served. We are waiting for you, our esteemed guests, for a very nice programme today." 

ITB President Ahmetoğlu thanked the Consul General of Turkey in Komotini Aykut Ünal and his wife İlayda Ünal for their participation in the event.

Ahmet Kara, President of the Union of Western Thrace Minority Schools Councillors also congratulated the Turkish Union of Xanthi for the event. Kara said that the signboard of the Turkish Union of Xanthi was removed from its place because of the word 'Turkish' in its name, but it was not possible to remove it from the hearts.

In his speech, Hüseyin Baltacı, President of the Western Thrace Minority University Graduates Association (WTMUGA) said "An hour ago we experienced a summer rain. It rained quickly and stopped. We have just experienced a downpour of culture and art at the exhibition. I congratulate everyone who contributed."

FEP Party Vice President Metin Hacıosman stated that as a party they always support the Xanthi Turkish Union and congratulated those who contributed to the organisation of the event.

Mustafa Trampa, Mufti of Xanthi, started his speech by expressing his pleasure to participate in such an event. 

Stating that he went back to his childhood years while visiting the exhibition, Mufti Trampa said: "All familiar motifs and artefacts. Our childhood was spent with these. It was as if I travelled to my home and village years ago." 

Mufti Trampa, Mufti of Xanthi, stated that every institution has an identity and personality just like every person and added: "When we say Turkish culture in Western Thrace and Xanthi, the first institution that comes to mind is the Xanthi Turkish Union. This association is like a Turkish cultural house. It is our culture and tradition that is being kept alive."

During the event, Selçuk Fehmi, Principal of Xanthi Minority Secondary School - High School and Bingül Tuzlacı, President of the Parent-Teacher Association were presented with a gift.

The performances started with the ITU Yumurcaklar Club. The little ones attending the Xanthi Turkish Union Yumurcaklar Club received full points from the audience with their performance.

Afterwards, Xanthi Turkish Union Folk Dance Teams took the stage. The folk dances teams, which performed as two separate groups, junior and senior, were highly appreciated with their new clothes and performances.

Xanthi Turkish Union Music Course students also performed in three groups. The songs and folk songs performed by the children were also appreciated by the guests.

After the presentation of souvenir certificates to the students who took part in the courses, it was the turn of the Xanthi Turkish Union Choir. From time to time the audience sang along with the folk songs performed by the choir. The performance of the ITB Choir received a standing ovation.

Finally, the "Fashion Show of Traditional Clothes from Yesterday to Today" prepared by the Xanthi Turkish Union Handicraft Courses was organised. In the fashion show, which took place with the presentation of ITB Vice President Sevil Şerifoğlu, there were 40 women's and children's clothes and wedding dresses, most of which were traditional clothes from the Xanthi region. The clothes were worn by the female students attending the study groups of the Xanthi Turkish Union. The fashion show mesmerised the participants and the audience was taken on a journey through history.

At the end of the event, the President of Xanthi Turkish Union Ozan Ahmetoğlu presented the Consul General of Turkey in Komotini Aykut Ünal with a painting with the emblem of ITB made with the art of philography in the courses. 

ITB Vice President Sevil Şerifoğlu also presented a necklace to İlayda Ünal, wife of Consul General Ünal. In addition, ITB Youth Section presented Consul General Ünal and Mufti Trampa of Xanthi with an ITB youth section t-shirt and a hat.

The event was organised by Hüsniye Arabacıoğlu and İpek Salihoğlu, ITB executives.

During the event, the Youth Branch and the Women's Branch of the Xanthi Turkish Union offered food and drinks. 

The participants of the festival had fun by visiting the exhibition and watching the programme presented by the ITB teams. 

Deputy Mufti of Xanthi Ahmet Hraloğlu and Fatma İmam, Mustafçova mayoral candidates Cemil Kabza, Ahmet Kurt and Mücahit Dükkancı, Western Thrace Turkish Teachers' Union Aspresident Hasan Bosnak, advisor of Xanthi MP Burhan Baran Gürhan Ömeroğlu, minority association presidents, provincial council member candidates, former ITU presidents and other guests attended the Culture - Art Festival.
