A driver has lost his life after being swept away by floodwaters in the Poşpoş River in the Kalkanca area of Gümülcine, as severe flooding hit parts of Western Thrace on Thursday, February 5, 2026.
Ignored Warnings Amid Rising Waters
According to eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred in the afternoon when the driver attempted to cross the river despite warning signs at the crossing and rapidly rising water levels. The vehicle was quickly caught in the strong current, dragged downstream, and disappeared from sight within minutes.
Emergency Response and Recovery Efforts
Following the alert, police, Civil Protection, and EMAK (the Hellenic Search and Rescue Unit) teams were immediately deployed to the scene. After extensive search and rescue operations, authorities located the driver inside the vehicle.
