Dr. Sadık Ahmet commemorated at panel on 30th anniversary of his death
The late Dr. Sadık Ahmet, the leader of the Western Thrace Turkish community, was commemorated at a panel held on the 30th anniversary of his death. The event, titled “Dr. Sadık Ahmet and the Cause of Western Thrace Turks on the 30th Anniversary of His Passing,” addressed his political struggle, the ongoing challenges faced by the Western Thrace Turkish minority, and current developments related to the issue.
The panel was jointly organized by the Zeytinburnu District Governorship, Zeytinburnu Municipality, Aydınlar Ocağı, and the Western Thrace Turks Solidarity Association. The program focused on Dr. Sadık Ahmet’s life and his legacy in advocating for the rights of the Western Thrace Turkish community.
Moderated by Prof. Dr. Mustafa Erkal, the panel featured speeches by Işık Ahmet, Prof. Dr. Yaşar Hacısalihoğlu, Rector of Istanbul Yeni Yüzyıl University, and Prof. Dr. Nilüfer Erdem.
Speakers emphasized the historical significance of Dr. Sadık Ahmet’s struggle for the identity, education, religious freedom, and organizational rights of Western Thrace Turks. They highlighted that his unwavering defense of the “Turkish” identity, despite sustained pressure and persecution, marked a turning point for the Western Thrace Turkish minority and continues to inspire ongoing advocacy efforts today.
