Another nonsense from İlhan Ahmet: (Türkiye) may invade Western Thrace

The unreasonable allegations of Pasok MP İlhan Ahmet about Türkiye were responded by Milliyet Newspaper Editor-in-Chief Özay Şendir.

Pasok MP İlhan Ahmet continues to draw attention with his statements about the Consulate General of Türkiye in Komotini and Türkiye. Ilhan Ahmet's statement "Türkiye can occupy Western Thrace" referring to Türkiye made us say "give up".

Özay Şendir, Editor-in-Chief of Milliyet Newspaper, sent a message to Prime Minister Mitsotakis regarding the claim made by İlhan Ahmet, MP for Rodopi, to Kathimerini that Türkiye might invade Western Thrace.

Özay Şendir's column titled "Türkiye will not occupy Western Thrace Mr. Mitsotakis" is as follows:

"İlhan Ahmet is a PASOK MP elected with the votes of the minority in Western Thrace.

In a recent interview with Kathimerini, Ilhan Ahmet likened Türkiye to Russia.

Just as Russia invaded Ukraine on the grounds of oppression of Russian speakers, he claimed that Türkiye could also invade Western Thrace.

Moreover, he proudly told us that he had made this claim not only in the newspaper but also at a meeting of the European Union on minorities.

This is my third article about this MP.

After my first two articles, he complained about me everywhere he could find.

The Press Council unanimously decided that his complaint was unjustified.

The only support this man could find was from a person who used adjectives he should not have used because he held a public office on the quota of a party.

Ironically, he also declared the support of that one person as 'the most authoritative institution in the Turkish media', whereupon the Centre for Combating Disinformation of the Directorate of Communications was forced to announce that there is no such institution in Türkiye as İlhan Ahmet presented it, and that the article in question was the personal opinion of only one person.

After all, İlhan Ahmet is not a person who can compete in lies for me, and that is why I am putting his words in quotation marks here:

'Türkiye wants the economic, social and political situation not to improve, so it holds a weapon in its hands and tells the EU in international forums that the Turkish minority is being oppressed by Greece. It is looking for an excuse to intervene the day after tomorrow, even militarily. Did we not experience this with Russia in Ukraine? Didn't Russia say that Russian speakers in Ukraine were being oppressed and militarily occupied? I recently spoke at an EU event on the role of minorities in Europe and I said: 'If we allow the other state to have a narrative, it can invade.'

I think that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will do what is necessary for this outrageous allegation.

A person like İlhan Ahmet, who poisons the Turkish-Greek peace environment, who makes statements as if Türkiye has eyes on the territory of other countries, who claims that Ankara is deliberately not defending the rights of the minority in Western Thrace, should not be allowed to enter Türkiye's borders...

Mitsotakis and Erdoğan

War is fought with weapons, but only the brave can make peace.

Of course, this new process initiated by President Erdoğan and Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis will not be easy.

We do not even agree on the number of issues we disagree on, but there is a will put forward.

We know and see that those who are disturbed by this will and the search for peace are war-mongering for their political or personal interests.

This is not a comment I am going to write, but definite information:

Türkiye has never sought to occupy the territory of Greece or any other neighbour and increase its surface area.

Therefore, no one should pay attention to such exaggerated comments and unsourced accusations.

Since the Turkish people do not see the Greek people as enemies, 20 thousand people will flock to the Greek islands during the holiday.

I think this is our most important capital for peace.

In line with Milliyet Newspaper's historical mission, we continue to do our part in this search for peace.

The sports directors of Kathimerini and Milliyet will exchange articles ahead of the Fenerbahçe-Olympiakos match.

Although the exact date is not certain, Prime Minister Mitsotakis will be in Türkiye in mid-May, most probably on 11-14 May.

Before that trip, dear Alexis, Editor-in-Chief of Kathimerini, will write in Milliyet and I will write in Kathimerini.

Maybe not at once, but over time we will see that the peace to be achieved in the Aegean will have no losers..."
