Greece, which states that it is a country of religious freedom, has committed another violence against religious freedom. Criminal lawsuits were filed against Mustafa Darmon who is Imam in the village of Agnila in Xanthi, on the grounds that "he was an imam (place extortion) even though there was no appointed imam".
As it is known in Greece, muftis are appointed by the state, despite the article of the Lausanne Treaty that gives the minority the right to elect their religious leaders by themselves. In this manner, muftis are appointed for decades, as well as numerous lawsuits had been filed against them.
Muftis being 'illegal' persons according to the state, imams who are employed by the muftis are accounted as 'criminals' too. Lastly, Mustafa Darmon who is the Imam of Agnila village in Xanthi has faced a criminal lawsuit with a reason that "he was an imam (place extortion) even though there was no appointed imam".
As it would be remembered Greek President Pavlopoulos, who used sentences to deny the ethnic identity of the minority has pointed out that Greece is a country where religious freedom exists. However, when all these happen against clerics, it is obvious that Pavlopoulos's expression is just for legitimizing the denial of ethnic identity and cover up the assimilation policies.
