15th Dr. Sadık Ahmet Football Tournament concludes with emotional tribute and sportsmanship
The 15th annual Dr. Sadık Ahmet Football Tournament, organized by the Young Academics Group (GAT) under the auspices of the Association of Western Thrace Minority University Graduates, concluded on the evening of Wednesday, July 23 with thrilling final matches and a heartfelt commemorative ceremony.
In the youth final, Yalımlı Yıldızları triumphed over Kurcalı Spor with a 3-1 victory. Earlier in the evening, a match between veteran teams ended in a 2-2 draw, showcasing unity and friendly competition.
The championship match, played between GAT Selanik and Çepelli Kartalları, began with a one-minute silence in honor of Dr. Sadık Ahmet, a revered leader and symbol of minority rights in Western Thrace. In a high-energy and respectful match, GAT Selanik emerged victorious with a 4-3 scoreline, claiming the tournament title.
A Legacy Beyond Sports
Before the trophy ceremony, GAT President Eren Sait addressed the audience with a poignant speech:
“Today is not just the final of a football tournament—it is also a moment to remember and honor a great leader who became the voice, the resistance, and the hope of his people: Dr. Sadık Ahmet.”
Eren described Dr. Ahmet as both a life-saving doctor and a fearless advocate for his people's identity and dignity:
“He never remained silent in the face of oppression, never bowed under pressure, and stood trial simply for declaring ‘I am a Turk.’ His courage inspired not only the Turks of Western Thrace but oppressed peoples everywhere. This tournament is a continuation of his struggle and a celebration of unity through sport.”
He concluded with a message of gratitude:
“We thank all institutions, volunteers, athletes, and guests who contributed to this meaningful event. We remember Dr. Sadık Ahmet with deep respect and longing. May his courage and vision continue to guide us.”

The award ceremony, held at the Çepelli village football field, was attended by Dr. Sadık Ahmet’s family, including:
