Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Türkiye, was commemorated with a ceremony in the house where he was born in Thessaloniki, Greece, on the 85th anniversary of his passing away.

The commemoration ceremony, organised by the Consulate General of Türkiye in Thessaloniki, attracted great interest of visitors from Türkiye and various countries of Europe.

While the garden of Atatürk House was crowded with visitors, hundreds of people gathered around the house.

At 09.05 local time, the National Anthem was recited after 2 minutes of silence.

Speaking at the ceremony, Consul General of Türkiye in Thessaloniki Serkan Gedik said: "Today we remember Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of our Republic, with longing in the house and city where he opened his eyes to life. Wherever we are, our hearts are filled with love for Atatürk on the morning of 10 November."

Stating that they are proud to have a leader like Atatürk, Gedik said that they are honoured to be in the house where Atatürk was born and where he dreamed of the revolutions he would implement in the future and in his spiritual presence on 10 November.

Emphasising the importance of protecting Atatürk House and promoting it to wider circles, Gedik said that in the 100th year, there was a greater interest in Atatürk House than ever before.

Gedik stated that the love for Atatürk that he saw in young people and children made him proud:

"Our country, which emerged from wars and suffered great losses, has become a country that has a say in the world by making significant progress in 100 years in the footsteps of our ancestor. We will reach our goals by working more in unity and solidarity. These painful days we live in the world, wars and the tragedy of innocent children show how correct the direction shown by our ancestor, that is, the policy of 'Peace at Home, Peace in the World' is. Atatürk's emphasis on peace in the world, whose lifetime was spent in wars, also points to his farsightedness. We hope that the suffering will end as soon as possible."
