Family on holiday to Türkiye detained at Kipi border crossing
On 7 July 2023, 33-year-old Mutlu Atılan, a father of 4 children, and his family, who set off from France to go on holiday to Türkiye, were detained by the Greek police due to an unfortunate incident at the Kipi Border Gate of Greece opening to Türkiye. The family of Atılan, who has been detained for 3 months despite being proven innocent, asked for support from the Turkish authorities for the release of their children.
According to the news of İHA, Mutlu Atılan and his family, who set off from France to go on holiday to Türkiye on 7 July 2023, arrived in Greece by ship from Bari, Italy. The family entered the queue formed to enter the Kipi Border Gate in Ipsala. However, there was a queue fight between expatriate families and a Greek citizen. The Greek citizen, who had a chronic epilepsy disease, died a few days after being taken to hospital after collapsing in an unfortunate way, although there was no physical assault. According to the eyewitnesses at the scene, the Greek Police detained 33-year-old Mutlu Atılan, who had nothing to do with the incident. Although the vehicle was examined in the court after the accident and an autopsy was performed on the deceased Greek citizen, Atılan, whose innocence was proven, continues to be detained in Greece.
Mutlu Atılan's wife Durna Atılan stated that they landed in Greece from France by ship on 7 July 2023 and said, "We got stuck in the queue at the Kipi Border Gate in Ipsala. During the queue, we saw a Greek citizen and Turkish expatriates arguing. Afterwards, we do not know whether that Greek citizen fainted while passing between the cars or whether he slipped and fell. Then the Greek police came and detained my husband. The witnesses there said that my husband hit that citizen with his car. However, both the expert reports and the examinations on the vehicle proved that my husband was innocent. However, despite this, my husband is still detained in Greece. We ask our authorities to help us and to release my husband who is innocent of the crime as soon as possible."
Mutlu Atılan's mother Leyla Atılan, a dialysis patient, and father Satılmış Atılan, a heart patient, said that they wanted to be reunited with their son as soon as possible and asked the state authorities to find a solution to this case as soon as possible.
