Erdoğan: Israel’s recognition of Somaliland ‘Illegal and unacceptable’

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has condemned Israel’s decision to recognize Somaliland as an independent state, calling the move illegal and warning that it could further destabilize the Horn of Africa.

Speaking at a joint news conference with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Erdoğan said Somalia’s unity and territorial integrity are a priority for Türkiye, stressing that any attempt to legitimize Somaliland’s secession violates Somalia’s sovereignty.

Israel announced on Friday that it had recognized Somaliland, a self-declared breakaway region that has operated as a de facto independent entity since 1991 but lacks international recognition. The Somali government continues to view Somaliland as an integral part of its territory and rejects any foreign engagement with the region.

Erdoğan reaffirmed Türkiye’s strong political, security, and economic support for Somalia, highlighting deep historical ties between the two countries ahead of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2026. He recalled Türkiye’s humanitarian assistance during Somalia’s drought years and said Ankara’s support has contributed to improvements in security and political stability.

He noted that Türkiye continues to assist Somalia’s fight against terrorism through training and equipment for its armed forces, helping pave the way for recent nationwide elections.

Erdoğan also pointed to expanding cooperation in energy, fisheries, and space. He said Turkish seismic surveys have been completed in Somali waters, with offshore drilling planned for 2026, and announced plans to establish a Turkish-backed spaceport in Somalia.

President Mohamud welcomed Türkiye’s support, saying Somalia has clearly felt Ankara’s backing at a time when its sovereignty and territorial integrity face serious threats.
