Pole vault: Karalis becomes first Greek to clear 6 meters indoors

The bronze Olympic champion had promised he would try to make this milestone at the National Indoor Track and Field Championship over the weekend and he succeeded.

With a jump of 6.01m, “Manolo” achieved a national record, surpassing even the 6.00m he has done in outdoor athletics.

Karalis started his efforts at 5.65m, which he cleared with the first jump. He missed an attempt at 5.85m, but passed with the second attempt and then set the bar at 5.95m. and it took just one jump to set a national indoor record – for the fourth time this season.

That was already a great performance for the Olympiakos athlete, but it was not enough for him, as he followed it up with 6.01m., with one jump, which caused a frenzy of excitement at the Peace and Friendship Stadium’s stands.

Greece’s other track-and-field superstar, long-jumper Miltos Tentoglou, won gold for a seventh consecutive time, with a 7.92m jump.
