Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Yerapetritis, marking Greece’s assumption of a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council starting January 1, emphasized Greece’s role as a stabilizing bridge in a turbulent global landscape.

He reaffirmed Greece’s commitment to international law as the foundation of diplomacy and pledged to keep the Cyprus issue on the UN agenda.

Addressing Greek-Turkish relations, Yerapetritis noted significant improvements over the past year, such as reduced airspace violations, increased bilateral trade, and cooperation in civil protection. However, he acknowledged unresolved differences regarding maritime boundaries and the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Yerapetritis highlighted ongoing dialogue as essential, aiming to strengthen cooperation ahead of the High-Level Cooperation Council meeting in early 2025. He reiterated Greece’s position that sovereignty issues are non-negotiable while emphasizing the necessity of avoiding tensions to maintain progress in bilateral relations and regional peace.

On Cyprus, he confirmed renewed momentum, including UN-led efforts and the appointment of a special representative to advance resolution discussions
