Velopoulos calls for war with Türkiye in Parliament: "Someone needs to declare this war"

Kyriakos Velopoulos, leader of the Greek Solution party, caused a stir in the Greek Parliament by calling for a war declaration against Turkey during a session reviewing the fire season. Velopoulos warned, "Someone needs to declare this war. Otherwise, the Turks will reach Sunio, maybe even the Acropolis."

His bold remarks were met with a humorous response from Parliament President Konstantinos Tasoulas, who quipped, "Don't do it so suddenly, you scared us!" lightening the tense atmosphere in the chamber.

During the session, Velopoulos criticized the government's fire prevention efforts, specifically the "112" emergency line. He pointed out, "We will use it even when Turkey attacks, but we have no shelters to hide in." His remarks were both a critique of the government and a warning about a potential Turkish threat.

While parliamentary sessions in Greece often feature heated debates, Velopoulos' comments raised tensions briefly before Tasoulas' joke brought a moment of relief. Velopoulos continued his criticisms, drawing attention to the lack of bomb shelters and warning that Greece is unprepared for a Turkish attack.

In a fiery exchange with retired Admiral and MP Dionisis Hatzidakis, Velopoulos urged him to take action, saying, "You're an admiral, do something." This prompted another warning from Tasoulas, who reminded Velopoulos to speak collectively, not individually.

As tensions simmered, Tasoulas remarked, "You declared war on Turkey earlier, so they got a bit nervous," sparking laughter throughout the chamber. Velopoulos, however, maintained his stance, insisting, "Someone needs to declare this war, or the Turks will come all the way to the Acropolis. Do they need to be at the President's doorstep?"

Velopoulos’ provocative comments, coupled with the Parliament President's humorous interventions, brought a brief respite to the heated debate.
