Tsipras: Demilitarisation of the islands is out of the question
Answering the questions of journalists before the upcoming elections in Greece, main opposition SYRIZA President Alexis Tsipras gave messages towards Türkiye.
"There is a very interesting race not only in Greece but also in Türkiye," said Tsipras, "because for the first time we are faced with a very big and strong possibility that President Erdoğan, who has been in power for almost 20 years in the neighbouring country, will be defeated."
Tsipras added that he predicts that a new dialogue dynamic will emerge between Türkiye and the EU and the US in the coming period and said the following:
"Greece must be vigilant to set its own terms in this new positive agenda. Our strategy should be to use the positive agenda and the possibility of a customs union between the European Union and Türkiye, for example, to link it to the application to The Hague. Thus, the critical issue of our disputes over the continental shelf and the exclusive economic zone can be resolved at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. But with the inviolable condition that Greece will not endanger its territory, i.e. that there are no grey zones and that Greece has the right to defend its territory. There is therefore no question of demilitarising the islands."
