Protesters gathered in Athens and marched to the Parliament building. The protesters opposed private universities in the country and demanded more budget allocation for education.

In Thessaloniki, Volos, Xanthi and Rethymnos, students and teachers also organised protests for the same reasons.

Teachers in secondary schools also staged a work stoppage from 11.00 to 14.00 local time.

There are no private universities in Greece. The diplomas of educational institutions serving at higher education level under the name of "college" are not recognised in the country.

Prime Minister Kiryakos Mitsotakis, in his speech before the Council of Ministers meeting held on 20 December 2023, announced that a new legal regulation was being prepared to allow the opening of private universities in the country.

"We will support state universities more, and at the same time we will create the necessary framework for non-profit and non-state higher education institutions to finally operate in Greece," Mitsotakis said.
