Simplifying medicine: Words patients can trust

A digital platform, Health Alphabet (Alfavitari Ygeias), has been launched by the Greek Patients’ Association to make medical terminology accessible to all.

Designed to bridge the communication gap between patients and healthcare providers, the platform offers simplified explanations of complex terms, such as “differential diagnosis” and “prognosis.”

Research highlights the urgency of such a tool: 12% of Greeks have very low health literacy, while 35% struggle to interpret medical information. Many face challenges in finding reliable sources or evaluating the credibility of health-related news.

The platform functions like a search engine, providing concise definitions for over 600 medical terms. It aims to empower users to make informed health decisions by improving their ability to navigate and understand medical data. Future updates will include multimedia aids such as infographics and podcasts.

As Association Vice President Katerina Koutsogianni remarked, “In an era of information overload, improving health literacy helps us distinguish accurate and reliable information.”
