Personal Number: Deadline for applications ends – Automatic issuance from September 5

Citizens have only a few days left to apply for their own Personal Number, which will now accompany them in all transactions with the public sector. Starting Friday, September 5, anyone who has not yet obtained a Personal Number will automatically be assigned one by the system, ensuring that every Greek citizen has a unique identification number.
This number will gradually replace the multiple identifiers currently in use, such as the Social Security Number (AMKA), the Tax Identification Number (AFM), and the ID card number. From early September, it will be automatically issued to those who have not applied for it.
Citizens may apply for their Personal Number through gov.gr, after verifying their personal information stored in public registries. If any corrections are needed, they can update their details within the application, and the relevant register will be updated automatically.
To complete the process, citizens must first register with the National Contact Register (EMEP) and confirm their mobile phone number. They will then use their Taxisnet credentials to log in, select two of three alphanumeric characters to be added as a prefix to their Taxisnet number, and thus generate their Personal Number. The same procedure can be followed for minor dependents.
The Personal Number is issued once per individual, is unique, and cannot be changed. With this initiative, the government aims to modernize digital governance, simplify transactions and citizen identification, and strengthen the security and protection of personal data in an increasingly digital environment.
