Penalties for forest fires to be increased

Greek Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Vasilis Kikilias announced that the penalties for arson and negligently causing forest fires in the country will be increased.

Speaking to Greek State Television ERT, Kikilias evaluated the frequent forest fires in July.

Kikilias stated that a total of 1470 fires broke out in July, emphasising that 10 of them were large-scale.

Kikilias pointed out that arson and human negligence, as well as the rise in air temperatures up to 46 degrees Celsius, increased the number of fires along with strong winds, and said that measures such as training the police, military and fire brigade personnel and local administrations on the subject, and implementing training programmes in primary and secondary schools and universities are planned in order to combat fires.

Stating that the penalties for those who set fire to forests will be increased tenfold, Kikilias noted that the penalties for those who negligently cause fires around their houses and gardens will also be increased.
