Over 2.5 million new Greek ID cards issued since September 2023
More than 2.5 million new Greek ID cards have been issued since their official rollout began on September 25, 2023, according to the latest government data. The total number of IDs that will need to be replaced nationwide is estimated at around 9 million.
Each newly issued ID is automatically registered by the Hellenic Police in the National Citizens Registry, ensuring that all connected public services receive updates in real time.
Authorities, however, are reminding citizens that they must also update their personal details with relevant institutions and private organizations to prevent possible complications in transactions or contractual arrangements.
Particular attention should be given to banks and online banking platforms, employers, and insurance providers, as well as mobile and internet service companies.
Citizens are also advised to inform utility providers if their ID number is linked to standing payment orders or service contracts, to ensure uninterrupted billing and service continuity.
