The National Public Health Organisation (NPHO) on Friday announced that the first case of Western Nile virus infection contracted in 2024 has been diagnosed in Greece, with the most like site of exposure to the virus being the Larisa regional unit.

The patient presented symptoms of mild encephalitis, which started in the last 10 days of June, and has been discharged from hospital.

Cases of Western Nile virus infections are now a common occurrence during the summer months after 2010, while the NPHO blamed mild winter temperatures for the relatively early appearance of the disease in 2024.
