New national elevator register aims to boost safety, modernization
To improve safety and modernize aging infrastructure, the Ministry of Development is launching a nationwide Elevator Register. The goal is to record all elevators across the country, regardless of their current certification status, and identify those in need of upgrades to ensure safe operation.
The ministry clarified that administrative sanctions outlined in previous regulations will be suspended during the registration period.
The online platform for registration, https://elevator.mindev.gov.gr, will go live in early July right after the law is passed, and remain open until November 30, 2025, according to the ministry.
Registration will be mandatory and must be completed using gov.gr or Taxisnet credentials. It can be submitted by any resident of a home, apartment building owners or managers, public building operators, and also by certified maintenance staff or elevator installers.
After the registration phase, the collected data will be used to set a timeline for next steps, which may include modernization or certification requirements for elevators that do not meet safety standards.
Further details on the initiative will be included in the draft law for the National Quality Policy, set to be tabled in Parliament in the coming days.
