Main runway of Heraklion Airport to close 19–26 January 2026 for upgrade works

The main runway at Heraklion International Airport in Crete will be closed from Monday, 19 January 2026, until Monday, 26 January 2026, due to scheduled upgrade and maintenance works.

According to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), the airport will remain operational throughout this period, with all flights handled via the secondary runway under specific safety restrictions. During the closure, the airport will only be able to accommodate aircraft with up to 72 seats, and flight operations will be limited to daylight hours.

The CAA has already issued a NOTAM covering the affected dates. The upgrade and maintenance project is intended to further improve operational safety at “Nikos Kazantzakis” Airport.

The timing of the works was coordinated with airlines and selected based on passenger traffic data in order to minimize inconvenience for travelers to and from the island.
