A new draft legislation introduced in Parliament will allow the state to move quickly and restore infrastructure following the repercussions of the 'Daniel' weather phenomenon - which inundated large sections of Thessaly and destroyed utilities networks and roads - Minister Christos Staikouras said on Wednesday.
Legislation to improve speed of recovery projects after storm, Staikouras says

The Infrastructure and Transport minister told Parliament that under the legislation, the ministry would assume the planning, assignment, and execution of restoration work in areas affected by Daniel where a state of emergency has been declared. Some of these emergency projects are under the jurisdiction of other ministries under normal circumstances, Staikouras said.

In addition, the legislation will also boost the speedy start and implementation of the restoration works. These projects will be pushed ahead through a cabinet act. The ministry will collaborate with local governments, regional governors, and the central government to note, prioritize, and push the projects, Staikouras noted, adding that this mechanism would allow more flexibility to the ministry.

Deputy Infrastructure and Transport Minister Nikos Tachiaos noted that some of the antiflooding projects have been removed from the Recovery Fund list because they would not possibly be completed by December 31, 2025. He said "they will be implemented normally with the use of other funding tools that the government has found."
