Latinopoulou on New York’s Muslim Mayor: “A dark day for the West”

Greek politician Afroditi Latinopoulou, leader of the Voice of Logic (Foni Logikis) Party, sparked widespread controversy with her remarks on the election of Zohran Mamdani, the newly elected Muslim Mayor of New York.

In social media posts and statements to journalists, Latinopoulou described Mamdani’s victory as “a dark day for the West.” Known for her ultranationalist rhetoric, the politician argued that the election represented “a setback for Western values.”

Latinopoulou claimed that Mamdani’s religious identity played a key role in his success, saying:

“Islamism is the new weapon the Left uses in elections.”

She also referenced videos circulating online, alleging that some Muslim groups are pursuing plans to “settle in cities, multiply, and eventually take control.”

In a statement addressing Western countries, Latinopoulou warned:

“After London, a second major metropolis has fallen. The number of cases where fanatic Islamists hold leadership positions will increase. Who benefits from this? Christians? Of course not. Who rejoiced at Mamdani’s election? The Left rejoiced, left-wing parties rejoiced, Erdoğan rejoiced, Gaza rejoiced. Should I rejoice? A red line must be drawn — we must protect our nations.”

Her comments have drawn sharp criticism from political figures and social media users alike, many accusing her of spreading Islamophobic and divisive rhetoric.
