Irregular migrants trapped in the fire in Meric handed over to the police
Irregular migrants crossing to Greece were stranded in Dadia due to the forest fire.The irregular migrant group of about 30 people, one Iraqi, one Lebanese and the others Syrian, identified by the fire brigade teams, were handed over to the police teams called to the region.
Speaking to AA correspondent, irregular migrant Mohammed Suryan said that they were planning to cross from Greece to Germany but had to return when the fires started. Suryan said that other irregular migrants were also in the fire zone, adding that he did not know what their fate was and where they went.
21 people had died in the fires
A shepherd in Viotia in Greece and an irregular migrant in Kavacik (Lefkimi) in Evros Region had died on 21 August.
The bodies of 18 people, including 2 children, were found in the Dadia forest area on 22 August, presumably belonging to irregular migrants trying to cross the Evros River to Greece. The number of people killed in the fires rose to 21 when another body, presumably belonging to an irregular migrant, was found in the Dadia forest area on 25 August.
