Greek President Tasoulas declares “Greece–Türkiye borders are non-negotiable” during Meriç visit

Konstantinos Tasoulas stated that Greece’s land and maritime borders with Türkiye are “non-negotiable,” emphasizing that the country will “absolutely safeguard” its territorial sovereignty during a visit to the Evros (Meriç) region.

The visit took place on the anniversary of the incorporation of Dedeağaç into Greece. Tasoulas was present in the region as part of official commemorations and security-focused inspections along the border area.

On 14 May, President Tasoulas visited the Kipi Border Crossing border outpost, where he received briefings from military officials regarding operational conditions along the Greece–Türkiye frontier.

In his remarks, Tasoulas stated that “Greece–Türkiye land and sea borders are non-negotiable,” adding that Greece remains fully committed to defending them “in an absolute manner.”

He further argued that Greece would not be influenced by threats or provocations, stating that the country continues to defend its borders “steadfastly, regardless of pressures that ignore history, international law, and the law of the sea.”

Highlighting the role of the armed forces stationed in the Meriç region, Tasoulas described them as essential to national security and urged public confidence in Greece’s military institutions.

The President was accompanied by Deputy Minister of National Defence Thanasis Davakis and senior military officials during the visit.

Tasoulas later walked along the border bridge and reached the Greece–Türkiye frontier line, where he spoke with soldiers on duty.
