Greek parliament approves appendices related to outright funding, loan agreements by EU

The appendix to the Funding Convention and the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism (RRM) Loan Convention, signed between the European Commission and Greece.

Specifically, ruling New Democracy supported the bill with the appendices in principle, while main opposition SYRIZA, PASOK and Greek Solution stated 'present'. On the contrary, the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), Nea Aristera, Spartiates, Niki and Plefsi Eleftherias voted against it.

More parties supported the first article of the bill on the appendix to the RRM Funding Convention, which foresees an allocation by the EU to Greece of an additional funding of 4.7 billion euros. This was approved by New Democracy, Greek Solution and Spartiates, with SYRIZA, PASOK and Plefsi Eleftherias stating 'present' and KKE, Nea Aristera and Niki rejecting it.

In the second article, on the appendix to the Loan Convention, which foresees an additional loan from the EU to Greece of 5 billion euros, New Democracy approved it, SYRIZA and PASOK stated 'present' and all other parties rejected it.

The non-returnable EU support of 18.2 billion euros will be allocated to social programs, Alternate National Economy and Finance Minister Nikos Papathanassis told parliament on Wednesday, detailing the funding and loan targets.

Referring to statements by European Commissioner for Economy Paolo Gentiloni after meeting with the prime minister that he tied to the bill in parliament, Papathanassis said, "The funds that our country will receive and which, obviously, the opposition does not recognize and therefore does not vote for, total 36 billion euros - 18.2 billion euros of funding contribution that does not need to be repaid, and 7.7 billion euros in loan support."

The 18.2 billion includes upgrading of hospitals and health centers besides social programs, he added.
