Greek Foreign Minister: Greece-U.S. relations have a deep strategic character – Dialogue with Türkiye must continue

Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis emphasized Greece’s role as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, stating that the country is becoming “a co-architect of global security.” His remarks came in an interview with the Greek-American newspaper Ethnikos Kirikas just hours before his trip to the United States. During his visit, Gerapetritis will attend UN sessions on Ukraine and Syria and hold high-level meetings with the new U.S. administration.

With global attention focused on the White House’s foreign policy moves, the Greek Foreign Minister highlighted the strategic nature of U.S.-Greece relations and both countries’ commitment to further strengthening their ties.

"Greece and the United States share a deep strategic relationship. The Greek government had worked closely and constructively with the American side during President Trump’s first term. We have every reason to believe that this will continue," Gerapetritis stated.

Athens is closely monitoring developments under President Trump’s foreign policy agenda. The minister stressed that as an EU member, Greece recognizes the need for the Union to enhance its global role while remaining committed to international law and the UN Charter.

Regarding Greek-Turkish relations, Gerapetritis reaffirmed that Greece will never negotiate issues related to national sovereignty. He emphasized that diplomatic channels help prevent crises, though it would be unrealistic to expect Türkiye to abandon its longstanding claims.

"We acknowledge only one dispute that can be brought before international jurisdiction—the delimitation of the continental shelf and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Türkiye continues to link this discussion with other issues, which is unacceptable. As a result, our positions remain far apart. However, dialogue must not stop," he concluded.
