Greece to install anti-drone systems in prisons by end of 2026
Greece is set to install new security and anti-drone systems in prisons across the country by the end of 2026 as part of a broader programme to strengthen screening and prevent prohibited items from entering prison facilities.
The Ministry of Citizen Protection said modern detection equipment is already being installed following a decision by Deputy Minister of Citizen Protection Ioannis Lampropoulos.
Funding of €3.7 million has been approved for the procurement and installation of the new security systems.
New screening equipment deployed
The programme includes:
48 walk-through metal detectors
19 X-ray 60 x 40 dual-view devices
17 X-ray 100 x 100 single-view devices
87 portable metal detectors
Authorities said the equipment will strengthen efforts to detect prohibited items and substances and improve security screening procedures at prisons.
Anti-drone systems to target deliveries
The General Secretariat for Crime Policy will also procure a large number of anti-drone systems from the Armed Forces.
The systems are intended to address incidents in which unmanned aircraft are used to drop prohibited items and substances into prison compounds.
The move forms part of a wider plan to modernise prison security and strengthen authorities’ ability to respond to emerging methods of introducing contraband.
The government said the investment represents a significant first in terms of funding allocated for prison security systems.
Funding has also been secured for the construction of 11 new prisons across Greece, according to the Ministry of Citizen Protection.
The measures are part of the government’s broader effort to modernise prison infrastructure and strengthen security across the country’s correctional facilities.
