Greece revokes Syrian refugee status
The Ministry of Migration and Asylum has revoked the refugee status of 1,203 Syrian nationals between March 1 and April 9, following a re-examination of cases under the current legal framework.
The decisions were carried out by the Revocations Department of the Asylum Service, as part of efforts to ensure proper implementation of international protection procedures, the ministry said.
At the same time, authorities reported progress in voluntary returns to Syria. Under an EU co-funded programme implemented with International Organization for Migration, Greece ranks first among EU member states in returns to Syria since October 2025.
Official figures show 89 voluntary returns from Greece, accounting for about half of the EU total of 178 during the same period, marking a gradual resumption of returns after a decade-long pause.
The ministry said the programme remains at an early stage but is expected to expand, as Greece seeks to strengthen the credibility of its asylum system and its role in managing migration at the European level.
