Greece reports tens of thousands of domestic violence cases and arrests
Greek Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis has highlighted the scale of domestic and gender-based violence in Greece, saying police respond to dozens of incidents every day and that thousands of people were arrested in connection with domestic violence.
Speaking on a television programme, Chrysochoidis said police deal with around 100 domestic violence incidents or reports each day. The figures he cited underscore the continuing scale of the issue in Greece.
Recent figures reported by the minister provide further context. In June 2026, Chrysochoidis said Greek police had handled around 22,000 domestic violence incidents in 2025 and made more than 13,500 arrests.
Domestic violence remains a major concern
Chrysochoidis said victims of domestic violence can include women, children and older people. He also claimed that around one-third of people involved in domestic violence incidents have an addiction problem or a psychiatric disorder.
The available figures concern cases handled or reported by the authorities and should not be interpreted as representing the total prevalence of domestic violence, as incidents that are not reported to police would not appear in these statistics.
In 2024, Greek police recorded 25,438 domestic-violence victim cases and made 13,503 arrests, according to figures previously presented by Chrysochoidis.
Greece expands use of Panic Button
Greek authorities are also using the Panic Button application as part of measures to protect victims of domestic violence.
The application can be installed on a mobile phone and allows a person who feels threatened to send an emergency alert directly to police by activating the button.
The system was expanded nationwide in 2024 and made available to all adult victims of domestic violence. Greek police reported that 5,817 victims installed the application in 2024 and that it was activated 841 times during the year.
The government has also established specialised domestic violence offices within the police and safe houses intended to provide immediate protection and accommodation for victims.
