Greece rental allowance: Who is eligible and how to apply
Low-income households renting their primary residence in Greece may be eligible for monthly housing support from the Organization of Welfare Benefits and Social Solidarity (OPEKA), with payments ranging from €70 to €210 depending on household size.
The Housing Allowance (Επίδομα Στέγασης) is designed to help eligible households cover part of their rent costs.
Applications can be submitted electronically. Applicants must authenticate through the TAXIS system, while the rental agreement for the primary residence must be active and valid on the date of application.
How much is the monthly allowance?
The basic housing allowance is €70 per month for a one-person household.
An additional €35 is added for each extra household member, with the total monthly payment reaching up to €210.
Single-parent households can receive an additional increase for the first minor child, subject to the program’s eligibility rules.
Who can qualify?
Applicants must be renting their primary residence and meet specific income, property and residency requirements.
The income threshold starts at €7,000 per year for a one-person household and increases by €3,500 for each additional household member. The applicable maximum income limits vary according to household composition.
Applicants must also have an electronically registered rental agreement that is valid on the date the application is submitted.
How to apply for the housing allowance
Applications are submitted online through the OPEKA system, with applicants required to verify their identity using their TAXIS credentials.
Once approved, the housing allowance is granted for a six-month period.
In cases where eligibility conditions continue to be met, certain applications may be renewed automatically, allowing eligible households to continue receiving the benefit without submitting a completely new application.
The scheme is part of Greece’s social welfare measures aimed at supporting households facing housing and living-cost pressures.
