Greece allegedly opens bases to US for 'humanitarian work'

Media reports claimed that the country had agreed to "facilitate" the US in the use of the bases.

According to the news reports citing sources in the Ministry of National Defence, the permission to use the bases was granted only for transport aircraft, support helicopters and personnel to be used for humanitarian reasons.

It was emphasised that US aircraft and other elements to be deployed at Greek bases "will be used for the evacuation of US, Greek and third country citizens from the region in the event of turmoil in the Middle East".

In the news reports, it was stated that this convenience was provided within the framework of the mutual defence cooperation agreement between the USA and Greece, and it was argued that the bases other than the bases stipulated by this agreement were also allowed to be used by the USA.

In the news on the "CNN Greece" news website in the previous days, it was claimed that the US, aiming to be ready for any eventuality after the start of the Israeli - Palestinian conflict, wanted to use the infrastructure of the Greek Armed Forces to deploy its military aircraft at a "safe distance".

In the photographs obtained by CNN Greece from the Suda Base in Crete, 7 US airlift vehicles, 10 C-130 transport aircraft, a KC-135 aerial refuelling aircraft, a Boeing P-8 Poseidon type anti-submarine and anti-surface combat aircraft were seen.
