Greece acts to protect fourni coral reefs
On World Oceans Day, Greece announced new measures to safeguard coral reefs in the Fourni islands, located in the North Aegean Sea. A Ministerial Decision now bans fishing with towed gear in the protected area to prevent damage to vulnerable marine ecosystems.
This initiative is a collaboration involving the Ionian University, the Municipality of Fourni, scientists, NGOs, and local fishermen. So far, over 300 marine species have been documented, with ongoing efforts to enhance biodiversity protection.
Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou emphasized Greece’s commitment to marine conservation. He highlighted Greece’s leadership at the 3rd UN Ocean Conference (UNOC-3), underlining national efforts toward sustainable ocean governance.
