Greece is one of the main ports for migrants and refugees fleeing poverty and war in the Middle East, Africa and Asia and seeking to reach the European Union.
Data released by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) show that the number of people arriving in Greece this year has exceeded 15,600, 12,000 of whom arrived by sea.
In June, hundreds of people drowned in international waters off the coast of Greece when the fishing boat they were travelling from Libya to Italy capsized.
