Five schools closed in Athens after meningitis case

Municipal authorities have ordered the closure of five schools in central Athens for two days following a confirmed case of viral meningitis in an 18-year-old student.

The student was enrolled in the 6th vocational school in the district of Ambelokipi which houses another four educational facilities, state-run broadcaster ERT reported on Tuesday. He is currently being treated in the enhanced care unit of a hospital and his condition is stable.

The National Organization for Public Health (EODY) said the case is an isolated incident that is currently not a cause for concern, however, the case will be traced to prevent any transmission.

The municipality said classes will be held online while the schools are disinfected before reopening.

Meningitis is an infection that causes inflammation of the fluid and membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, known as the meninges.
