A powerful explosion during a scheduled hand-grenade training session on the island of Rhodes on Wednesday left one soldier dead and another seriously injured, the Hellenic Army General Staff announced.

The fatality is a 19-year-old professional soldier, while the injured serviceman is a 39-year-old married father of two. 

Both were rushed to the General Hospital of Rhodes, where the younger soldier was pronounced dead. The older soldier is undergoing surgery in critical condition.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the blast.

Following the incident, Defence Minister Nikos Dendias declared a three-day mourning period for the Armed Forces, from November 26 to 28, in honor of the fallen soldier.
